The Colonial Dog Breed Referral Service was formed in the mid 1960's by the Officers and Members of the area Kennel Clubs in an effort to aid prospective buyers in obtaining purebred dogs from reputable, established, private breeders at fair prices.
The people who are listed in our service are members of several Kennel Clubs in the Northern Westchester and Putnum Counties of New York and in Fairfield County in Conecticut. These breeders* are dedicated to improving their respective breeds by conforming to breed standards for good temperament and good health, as well as conformation.
*Buying from a breeder enables you to visit their home, look at their dogs and the conditions in which they are raised. You get to “interview” them and they to interview you. It is important to understand that a truly responsible breeder is far more concerned about the home you will provide than about selling you a puppy. Ask about health testing, the shot schedule, worming, etc. Most serious breeders belong to their parent club, a regional breed club and frequently a local all breed club. They are in a search for information to continue to improve their dogs and this will be important to you when you turn to them for help, should you have problems. CDBRS would like to distinquish that a true breeder, in every sense of the word, is one who devotes themself to the welfare of their breed. They are knowledgable about every aspect of their breed and are very protective of their breed. |
| Each breed recognized by the American Kennel Club has a parent club which runs the yearly business of the club. This includes officers, a newsletter editor, a rescue coordinator and show chairman for their annual show. In addition, there are often Regional Clubs for each breed which put on matches and a show and also run educational programs, within a region of the country. Each breed has a Standard by which the breed is judged and to which dogs are to be bred, some examples are height restriction or specific coat requirement. There are many issues that should be adhered to in a breeding program by a responsible bcreeder. This Standard can be found on the AKC site, along with the parent club information. When you visit COLONIALDOGFIND.COM click on a breed of interest and you will be connected to the AKC site for that breed, which will give you more information. |
